Asphalt Shingles
These shingles are mostly comprised of a fiberglass mat saturated in asphalt. Fiberglass is resistant to tearing and asphalt is naturally resistant to moisture. They have colored granules that protect the asphalt mat from mother nature and sunlight. The colored granules are also used to give the shingles color and visual dimensions. They rely on sealant strips to overlap each other and hold in place to resist high winds. Asphalt shingles are cost effective, performs well, come with a warranty, and can simulate the look of natural products.
Fiberglass vs. Organic
Fiberglass vs. Organic
A common misconception is that there are “asphalt shingles” and then there are “fiberglass shingles.” What some refer to as “asphalt” shingles are actually called “organic“. Years ago asphalt shingles were comprised of a paper or “organic” mat that was often heavier than today’s fiberglass asphalt shingles. But organic mats become susceptible to moisture over time and fiberglass shingles look and perform better in the long run. Today’s asphalt shingles are fiberglass.

Types Of Asphalt Shingles
3-Tab Shingles
A common economically priced asphalt shingle with 3-tabs that are exposed, giving some design. Often they come with a manufacturer's warranty of 20 to 25 years. While they are economical they are also more susceptible to wind damage or "blow off' than the shingles below.
Laminated
Slightly more than the 3-tabs in cost, laminated shingles give the most bang for your buck. They have a saw tooth design that resemble wood shingles. They resist wind damage much better than 3 tabs as well. It is common to see warranties between 30 and 50 years given by the manufacturers.
Designer
This commonly refers to high end asphalt shingles that resemble slate or shake shingles. Usually these are very heavy and more difficult to install but can look great when done properly. Manufacturers will give warranties between 50 years and "Lifetime".
Impact Resistant
These shingles look similar to the ones above, but they have been manufactured to receive the class 4 impact rating. Many times these are asphalt shingles modified with what is called SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) which adds to the impact resistance. These Shingles are made to resist hail damage, the key word is “resist” no shingle is 100% hail proof. Insurance companies will often provide discounts for installing these products.
